Today was the big day, Davis' first official surgery. Honestly, the hype at the hospital was more stressful and scary than the actual 15 minutes it took to put in the tubes. It's such a simple and very short procedure, but the before and after took the most time. Last week we had an appointment with our ENT to line up everything and prepare ourselves for ear plugs and ear drops. Yesterday I had to spend an hour at the hospital filling out all the paper work and getting instructions about where to go, how to bathe Davis, and not to let him eat or drink after midnight.
Besides the anesthesia, I was most worried about Davis wanting to eat first thing this morning. We woke him up right before we walked out the door, we had to be at the hospital at 5:30am. He was a little upset that we weren't feeding him his usual morning spread, but we gave him some toys in hopes to distract his hunger. The two hours till surgery weren't too bad, but towards the end Davis was bored with this so-called adventure.
As 7:30 rolled around it was time for surgery. The nurse came in to give him some tylenol and something to make him groggy. All of a sudden he was loopy and drowsy and that's when the nurses carried him off and I freaked out. I don't do well crying or showing any emotion in public, so I held the tears in. It's only tubes after all, right? But it was difficult seeing him go into surgery. I so badly wanted to go with him.
Forrest and I grabbed some coffee and waited in the waiting room. Before we knew it, the Dr was out telling us everything went great and that we could go in once he was awake. Unfortunately, they only let one of us go back to hold him. I wasn't expecting this to be the worst part, but it was. I put on a gown and went back to find my baby boy groggy, eyes closed, limp, and crying. After about 30 minutes, he started to calm down and was happy to chug a bottle and start munching on some graham crackers. We watched Sesame Street for about an hour as they kept checking his vitals and finally, they let us go home! Good thing because he was so ready to get outta that hospital bed.
